Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a diseases characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, which can lead to increased risk of fracture. Known as the “silent thief”, osteoporosis literally steals bone mass without giving any indication of doing so, until a fracture occurs.

Types of Osteoporosis

Primary Osteoporosis (older age)

Secondary Osteoporosis (certain diseases/medications)

Did you know?

  • 1 in 3 women & 1 in 5 men will break a bone due to osteoporosis

  • 40% of individuals are unable to walk independently after a hip fracture

  • Fractures from osteoporosis are more common than heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined.

However, preventing osteoporotic fractures is possible!

Research shows that participation in specific physical activities can improve bone health, increase muscle strength and enhance balance. This decreases the risk of falls which ultimately reduces incidents of fractures.

If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia (less severe form of bone loss than osteoporosis) or if you have any of the risk factors for developing osteoporosis, then an Osteoporosis Program is the right option for you.

Bone Fit is an advanced-evidence based exercise program developed by Osteoporosis Canada in conjunction with Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy for healthcare professionals.

At Mobilize Physio+, our Bone Fit trained physiotherapists, will design an individualized treatment program with emphasis on safe and effective exercises, balance training as well as fall prevention strategies to help you take control of your osteoporosis.
